Spirit and Truth Fellowship of Knoxville (STFK) is a member of the NOVA scienceNOW community and proudly sponsors Science Café events for the Knoxville, Tennessee area.
The STFK Science Café has been meeting monthly since April, 2011 to promote science interest and education. We begin each meeting by watching a 10-minute NOVA video about a science topic. This is followed by a Q&A discussion in which attendees have their questions answered by a guest scientist. This is a casual, fun, engaging dialog for adults and mature teenagers.
Please RSVP by sending an e-mail message to rsvp@knoxsciencecafe.org.
- Topic: "Using Physics and Nanotechnology to Understand Self-Organizing Processes in Bacterial Cells"
- Presenter: Jaan Mannik, Ph. D., Associate Professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Tennessee
- Synopsis: The topic is a rather new area of research. Jaan's main research focus is to understand how the main building blocks self-organize in bacterial cells. "The questions that we address is 1) how DNA is organized in bacterial cell, 2) how cell division proteins assemble, 3) how cell division and chromosome replication are coordinated. We address these questions from physics perspective but at the same time using extensively also molecular biology and genetics techniques."
- Date: Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 5:30-7:00 P.M.
- Location: This is a virtual-only meeting accessible with Zoom. We are currently using the free Zoom account, which limits the number of participants to 100. Therefore, we will send out the meeting invitation to those who RSVP on a first-come first-served basis.
